Yashwantrao Chavan Planetarium and Science Centre, Nashik


The city-based Planetarium and Science Centre project, started in 2007; is one-of-its-kind in the entire country, to be operated by the Local Municipal body - Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC). NMC had then launched this project in order to cultivate scientific temper and to inculcate the spirit of curiosity, reasoning and spreading science education among the young and inquisitive minds. The local Planetarium is definitely creating a sustained interest among Nashikites and even going beyond that, by creating social awareness in the city.


        This spacious building of Yashwantrao Chavan Planetarium / Y.C. Tarangan, is situated at a prime location, in the heart of the city; and has 700 sqm. floor area with beautiful landscaping and there is plenty of space available to display the models during exhibitions.
        Nashik Municipal Corporation has set up this state-of-the-art Planetarium with Digital Sky Theatre, having a unique 3-D Projection system (a project in India, in collaboration with Evans & Sutherland, E&S USA; who are world leaders in Digital Planetariums). The fully air-conditioned dome-shaped theatre of 10 metre diameter has a seating capacity of 105. There is a collection of Sky theatre programmes / shows, covering a wide range of topics related to Space Science & Astronomy.
        Also, there is an exhibition gallery with display of several posters in the Planetarium foyer area, which depicts various aspects of astronomy. To name a few, we have the Solar System, Our Milky Way Galaxy / Aakash Ganga, other galaxies, nebulae, etc; apart from the informative posters of Great Scientists and Inventors, which are prominently displayed outside the 3-D theatre. These displays are very informative and they add tremendous value to the local Planetarium.

Various Activities for Students

        Moreover, in the adjacent hall, there is a facility (LCD projection screens) of conducting lectures, popular talks, presentations to accomodate to a large audience. Every year, several student activitiesare also regularly conducted here, like :

  1. Model-making Contest & Celebration of the successful launch of ISRO's MOM, Mangalyaan-1.
  2. Celebration of 'National Science Day' (on 28th February).
  3. Remembering 'Yuri Gagarin's first Human Spaceflight and the dawn of Space age' (on 12th April).
  4. Celebration of '25 years of success of Hubble Space Telescope' (on 24th April).
  5. Celebration of the 'UN-declared World Space Week, WSW 2015' (from 4th to 10th October).
  6. Celebration of the 'UN-declared World Students' Day', to mark the Birth Anniversary of Late Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam (on 15th October).
